Change Climate Change is a short documentary that examines the global climate emergency through the eyes of a group of eight- and nine-year-old children from Mandeville Primary School in Hackney, London. The film weaves together the pupils’ striking artworks with documentary images and footage by photographer Gideon Mendel, whose work over the past eighteen years has focused on communities affected by flooding and fire around the world.
Through a dialogue between drawing, photographic print, and moving image, the film explores the tension between documentary reality and creative storytelling, offering a powerful cross-generational perspective on climate change. The children’s voices form a direct challenge to the generations currently shaping climate policy, underscoring the urgency of a crisis they will live with throughout their lifetimes.
The film premiered at Bloomberg Green Docs and was a Finalist. In 2024, Change Climate Change was selected to open the Ministerial Roundtable at the UN Europe and Central Asia Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, where it was screened for government ministers and international leaders.
